Let’s find solutions together.
COMMUNICATION AND TRANSPARENCY FROM CITY TO COMMUNITY CREATES TRUST
Better and Repetitive Communications need to commence to the public from different media platforms. Communication is vital in messaging that significant events are happening and alerting the community that hazards exist. Communication also informs and educates residents and visitors and how to voice their concerns to the city appropriately and effectively. The city website needs an overhaul. Staff needs to keep the site updated with current happenings, including meetings, where to get minutes, archives of council packets, and recordings of council meetings. I would like to see more outreach to the newer folks in Ouray and those who have lived here over the decades.
THE CITY OF OURAY COMMUNITY PLAN 2021
Utilize the plan as the guiding document that our community created.
Sewer and water issues remain. Solutions have been discussed for several years and need to manifest into reality. Rockfall and flood issues are an ever-occurring problem all over Ouray as the city sits in a hazard zone and flood area. More discussion about drainage, particularly on the west side of the city, needs to be addressed.
Our box canyon is landlocked but smart development will enhance the community. It needs to include attainable housing for those who wish to live and work in Ouray. One should not have to own real estate or commute long distances to live here.
UPDATE LAND USE CODE (LUC)
LUC needs to be updated, more defined, and user-friendly.
Not all that work in Ouray wish to live in Ouray. Therefore, we need to work collaboratively with agencies, organizations, and grant funders to provide transportation to and from communities in Ouray County to Montrose and perhaps regionally beyond.
LODGING OCCUPANCY TAX (LOT)
Community outreach and input on this subject are imperative. Marketing of Ouray’s shoulder seasons and off-season needs to continue, and a much better messaging system is badly needed, especially in the summer season.
VISITOR CENTER OPEN YEAR-ROUND
The Ouray Visitor Center (VC) needs to be open daily for 8 hours in the summer and at least 6 hours in the shoulder and off-seasons and needs to be fully staffed to assist our wonderful and knowledgable volunteers in guiding and educating visitors. Not having the VC open during off-season and shoulder seasons and limited hours during the two busiest visitation years has not only been a strain on visitors but has been a strain on the business community.
WORKING WITH OURAY COUNTY
Having a good working relationship with Ouray County makes us stronger as a community. In addition, our voice as a city is more robust by working productively with Ouray County and vice versa to solve the issues of growth, attainable housing, road improvements, connecting infrastructure, securing our businesses and residents, emergency issues, and more.
